News photographer Bill Quinn has been taking and collecting photographs of shipwrecks since he filmed the sinking of the Andrea Doria in 1956. For nearly half a century he has added to his remarkable archive, and his books represent some of the largest collections of shipwreck images in print.

First published in 1988 and long out of print, Shipwrecks along the Atlantic Coast has been reedited and redesigned for this new edition. It traces the history of eastern U.S. shipping since the age of sail through surviving images of shipwrecks. Here is the story, together with a Currier and Ives engraving, of the wreck of the steamer Atlantic near Halifax, Nova Scotia, on April 1, 1873, with a loss of 562 lives. Here are ships wrecked in the legendary Portland Gale of 1898 and the devastating hurricane of 1938. Here is the break-up of the oil tanker Argo Merchant in 1976. Quinn s compelling photo essay documents some of the most famous maritime disasters in Atlantic Coast history, like the sinking of the Titanic, and many more wrecks that have been all but lost to memory.
